A new suspected case of monkeypox has been identified in the Seattle area, where a man who traveled abroad was being tested Monday for the virus.

The monkeypox virus, which has usually been confined to Africa and transmitted to humans from animals such as monkeys, squirrels, and rodents, has been spreading to at least 12 countries outside of Africa with about 200 confirmed and suspected cases according to the World Health Organization.

"Monkeypox and chicken pox are actually quite similar, in the sense they are both associated with fever and a rash that comes across your whole body," said Dr. Blumberg, "Thankfully the big difference is monkeypox is not nearly as deadly as smallpox." , with more foreign travelers, and large sporting events, concerts and Pride approaching, health experts hope people will be careful.

"By nature, sexual activity involves intimate contact, which one would expect to increase the likelihood of transmission, whatever a person's sexual orientation and irrespective of the mode of transmission," said Mike Skinner, a virologist at Imperial College London. U.S. health officials said Monday they knew of one confirmed case, in the state of Massachusetts, and four probable cases -- two in Utah, one in Florida and one in New York City. All were men who had traveled outside the U.S.

Heymann chaired an urgent meeting of WHO's advisory group on infectious disease threats on Friday to assess the outbreak and said there was no evidence to suggest that monkeypox had mutated into a more infectious form.
