When Charles Everett IV began writing a letter to his children, it took him down a path that would lead to a published book.
Everett says he began the letter because he wanted his children to know their family history.
He was able to trace his family all the way back to the first documented patriarch, a slave named Charles, who had escaped slavery to join the Union Army. “Not only did he not want work and to be in subjugation to any man, he wanted to make sure his freedom was sealed,” said Everett.
