As the moon descends toward earth, it causes all manner of nightmares, like floods and volcanic eruptions and “gravity waves.” But the ruin remains mostly faraway, on TV, until the very end. There is a lot of talking in rooms in, way more than there should be in a big dumb disaster movie. That, I suppose, can be attributed to the realities of pandemic filmmaking. But I’d have to imagine that with $140 million at his disposal, Emmerich could have figured out a few clever ways to jazz things up.
