‘Mootilda,’ the wayward cow and N.J. local legend, has died

Mootilda got loose and had been wandering the the woods of Cape May County for months.

“Mootilda,” a beloved wandering cow who captured the hearts of a South Jersey community has been euthanized, her owner said Wednesday.

Penny, or Mootilda as she would soon be renamed, found her way to the woods near the home of Anne Merrill, a resident of the Marmora section of Upper Township. Merrill was on a walk in the woods near the end of June when she found the cow. “I had all sorts of hope that it would get resolved a little bit better,” Merrill said. “It’s kind of like losing a pet.”

So the owner said he chose to be in contact with the State Police and other animal rescue centers. Still, the problem was capturing the cow in the first place, he said. “My fear was that the cow was going to cause another accident,” the owner said. “Harming human life was the number one thing I wanted to avoid. I didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”
