The most expensive project is the $85 million widening of U.S. 72 from Providence Main to County Line Road.
Huntsville metro residents should become used to having their commutes to work disrupted over the next few years.
And that’s just not on the main arteries of Interstate 565, U.S. 72 and Memorial Parkway. According to an Alabama Department of Transportation report to the Huntsville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, there are more than $383 million in road projects currently under design or construction in the area.
That project will be done in stages, starting with a bridge replacement near Providence Main. The first stage is expected to get underway this fiscal year. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced about $50 million for the project last spring, but ALDOT officials said at a public meeting in May in Madison that funding has not been secured to fully finish the project, which could take years to complete. Phase 1 plans are 65% complete.Another project announced by Ivey, the $46.8 million widening of I-565 from County Line Road to Wall Triana Highway, is also expected to get underway next fiscal year. A plan review was held in August. The plan is 30% complete.
