She also cited Ellen Antonelli as a key teacher, and fondly recalls carrying a Blackfeet flag at a school assembly. The longtime theater instructor said she watched "Killers" and “One of the first things that stood out to me was watching Lily's eyes. Those are the same eyes that I remember, that are so full of depth and understanding and empathy.”
“She was bright, open hearted,” he said. “Willing to experiment, to fail and to learn from it and just kind of an adventuresome soul.” Today, Ryder owns the restaurant Betty on Queen Anne hill, and said Gladstone ate there in December. The two have remained in touch since high school. “It is just part of Lily's generosity in that she wants to bring other people with her on this journey,” he said. “I think it's really classy to say, 'I didn't do this alone.'”
“A lot of the world is just now learning who Lily is," Brooks said. "Our Native community, especially locally, has been familiar with her for a long time. Her impact has been — it's been far reaching, and it is still is very alive and strong within.
