Mud Creek, with its barn origins and fiery past, is a true community theater both in purpose and atmosphere.
Laughs echo as cast members and the directing team for the Mud Creek Players' production of “The Christmas Spirit” chat, reviewing lines and stage directions.
Sol Blumenthol, who’d been active in the Chicago theater scene for years, pitched the idea of putting on a play to the outgoing, lively group of friends, Michelle Moore, managing director and board president of Mud Creek Players, said. They performed their first production in October 1950 — in a barn.
“We can all participate at some level,” she said. “We’ll come out for set building days and we can paint together. My kids get to learn all kinds of interesting things while volunteering in the community.” “I don't know what it is, you feel like you're coming home when you come here,” she said. “Kind of like ‘Cheers.’”For the holidays this year, the theater elected to put on “The Christmas Spirit,” loosely based off the 1934 movie “Death Takes a Holiday,” where Death pays a visit to a woman on earth.
