With a third state title in four years on the line, and her team trailing to start the fourth quarter, four-year starter Imani Perez stepped up when Mullen needed it most, sinking all six of her free throws to push the Mustangs to a 44-38 win. The fulcrum of Mullen’s smothering, long-armed defense, Perez’s varied stat line — nine points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists — spoke to the many ways she impacted the Mustangs’ 19th consecutive playoff win and seventh state championship for the program.

“Since Imani and Gracie have been in this program, we haven’t lost a playoff game, and that is not an accident,” Cawley said. “They are program-changers, both of them.”
