Multiple people were reportedly killed in a predawn crash on state Route 163 in Kearny Mesa, and the southbound lanes of the highway remained closed during the Friday morning commute.in the crash. A California Highway Patrol incident log indicated the collision occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on south SR-163 near the Interstate 805 junction.
At least two vehicles, including a pickup believed to be a Toyota Tundra, were involved in the wreck and both overturned, according to the CHP. Footage from CBS8 showed the pickup ended up on its roof while the other vehicle, which appeared to be a sedan or hatchback, ended up on its tires but was badly mangled.
Authorities shut down all southbound lanes of SR-163 around 2 a.m., according to Caltrans San Diego and the CHP. The highway, a main route into downtown San Diego, remained completely blocked as of about 10 a.m. Friday.
