Governor again says New Jersey will unilaterally leave the bi-state Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, despite New York's insistence that it cannot do so.

Phil Murphy reiterated Wednesday that the state would unilaterally leave the bi-state Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, calling it “a completely different world” from the days when the watchdog agency was created nearly 70 years ago.

However, Parimal Garg, Murphy’s chief counsel, told New York officials nothing was standing in the way of New Jersey withdrawing from the Waterfront Commission on its own. Created in response to the deep-rooted corruption of the mob on the docks, the Waterfront Commission conducts background checks of those seeking jobs there and has ultimate say over who may work on the piers and in the cargo terminals.
