birthday. Since I’m the oldest grandchild on my father’s side, my relatives are eagerly anticipating my birthday and jokingly fighting over who gets to buy me my first drink and who gets to get me drunk for the first time.
It’s a milestone they want to see. The trouble is, I don’t want to drink. I don’t like the idea of consuming anything that lowers my inhibitions. At best, I’ll trip over my own feet or say something silly. At worst, I’ll say hurtful things or accidentally out myself as a lesbian, which could end in disaster. I’ve tried to talk to my family about my discomfort, but none of them will listen.
