The teen, who acted alone, was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was working nearby, authorities said. Other victims have not yet been identified. In addition to those killed, Uvalde Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Thomas Nordwick said they treated 14 patients who either remained, went home or were transferred to other hospitals for higher levels of care. Eleven were children.
A chaotic scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon at the Uvalde Civic Center, where authorities reunited crying children and parents. They included 53-year-old Jessie Rodriguez, who left his job as a carpenter to look for his 10-year-old daughter, Annabelle Gaudalupe Rodriguez. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 left 26 dead, including 20 children between 6 and 7 years old. Four years ago, 10 were killed at a shooting at Santa Fe High School.
The deadly massacre took place just before the National Rifle Association’s convention is scheduled to take place this weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The building was covered with banners promoting gun sponsors and gun giveaways during the four-day event.
