African restaurants around New Jersey will be taking part.
The inaugural event was held in 2021, and this year’s version will feature more than 30 restaurants as well as a festival atFrom now until Aug. 7, participating restaurants will offer special restaurant week menus and prices, serving cuisine from across Africa. They include Swahili Village, Surulere Suya, Aboki Suyam, Jollof and Grill, Delicious African Orchards, Semper’s Delight, Brooklyn Suya, Woulibam Haitian Restaurant, Acaraje, Mawo’s Kitchen, Kente Cones, Tall and Co.
“It means a lot that we can be part of this now,” chef Kevin Onyona, owner of Swahili Village in Newark, told NJ Advance Media, “so people can get to know and appreciate our restaurant. We’re looking forward to having a couple of dishes showcased during the festival.” The festival will feature food tastings, vendors selling handmade African items, live musical performances from Oseni Junior, Dolly P, Vibetone, Jega Smoove and Golden Gun, and DJ sets from Kassava, DJ 360, DJ Spindoll and DJ Sparrow. Tickets are $10 per day, plus fees and tax, and availableThe event began in New York in 2013 and added a festival component in 2017 — which inspired New Jersey’s event to feature a festival as well.
“We are happy and excited about coming back to Newark. Another opportunity for the community to come together,” African Restaurant Week CEO Akin Akinsanya said. “Come shop, dance and have a great time with family and friends.”
