New subpoenas hint at corruption investigation by the state into state tax breaks for developments.

The specific focus of the investigation was unclear and officials declined comment. But NJ Advance Media learned many of the records sought by the subpoenas are related to companies, individuals and transactions that have been publiclyOthers have been subpoenaed by the state Attorney General’s office as well, the sources said.

Norcross became a key figure in the probe, with investigators charging that legislation meant to spur economic development in the state had been re-written in part to benefit political insiders as well as Norcross interests in Camden. Those interests included his insurance company, Conner Strong & Buckelew, Cooper University Health Care, where Norcross serves as chairman of its board of trustees, and his brother, Philip Norcross, a New Jersey attorney and lobbyist.

“The city is not in a position to confirm or deny receipt of a criminal subpoena from any local, state, or federal law enforcement agency,” said city spokesman Vincent Basara. Subpoenaed as well, according to the sources, was the Camden Community Partnership, a private nonprofit organization once known as Cooper’s Ferry Partnership. The group serves as a catalyst for growth in the city and is currently, who served as Camden’s mayor while the city was reaping many of the tax incentives that later came under fire by the governor’s task force. She did not return messages left with her office.
