The mother of a 34-year-old New Jersey man found dead in his cell at the Morris County Correctional Facility has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the jail, claiming workers ignored the man’s serious medical conditions and should have taken him to a hospital. Damien Stefancik, a Passaic County resident, died in his cell on Nov. 27, 2021, of a pulmonary embolism that traveled from his leg to his heart, according to a lawsuit, which names Morris County, the sheriff’s office, and the jail as defendants.

Stefancik’s “brother was told that he was left in his cell for hours, and that there was blood on the floor when the was discovered,” states the suit, filed Nov. 4 in Superior Court of Morris County.
