Police shot and killed Everett Rand, 29, of Newark, after a foot pursuit outside a residence where two people had been shot, officials said.

New Jersey officials Tuesday identified the man shot and killed by police as they investigated a shooting that killed two people on May 3.

Everett Rand, 29, of Newark, was armed when police encountered him, according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.in a home on Johnson Avenue in Newark, officials said. Rand was seen running away from the crime scene, police said. Officers shot and killed Rand after a foot pursuit, the attorney general’s office said.

Steven Ferreira and Ryan Castro, both officers with the Newark Police Department, fired their weapons during the encounter, officials said. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the investigation, which is still ongoing, authorities said.
