Students stayed home from school in Haddon Heights so teachers could focus on de-stressing activities and strategies.
Instead of holding a typical professional development day Friday to train teachers on new curriculum and teaching methods, a South Jersey school district took a novel approach to helping educators reduce stress.in Camden County held a “non-traditional professional development day” in which 130 teachers participated in nearly three dozen sessions touting health, wellness, art, relaxation and fun, officials said.
and calls for ban books in school libraries. Meanwhile, teachers across the country have been asked to help students recover from learning loss and emotional problems exacerbated by the pandemic.teachers and principals were grappling with job-related stress at twice the rate of working adults overall.
Corn said some of the people leading the sessions donated their time and others provided reduced rates. There was no cost to the school district because it was able to cover any expenses with federal American Rescue Plan Act school funding, which underwrites mental health-related services.iconic “Born to Run” album from 1975“It was a de-stressing activity of just relaxing and learning about the art of collecting vinyl, cleaning vinyl and storing it,” Corn said afterward.
The purpose of the unconventional day, Corn said, was to let teachers “know we understand the stress they are under and provide a mechanism to take care of themselves and their mental health.”found 60% of teachers reported experiencing job-related stress frequently or always. Only 9% percent said they never or rarely experience stres. And 41% of the teachers surveyed said they perceived themselves as less effective when under stress.
“It’s hard to tell. There always teachers that retire. I just know that the stress level for teachers is certainly high,” Corn said.
