Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) should follow through with his threat to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) if he is going to do it, but declined to say whether she would vote to remove the Republican leader.
“It hasn’t happened yet, and I am not going to comment on conjecture here. Either he is going to file it, or he’s not. If he’s going to do it, put his money where his mouth is,” Mace said Sunday on ABC’s This Week.Gaetz, who helped lead the unsuccessful effort to deny McCarthy the speakership, doubled down on his efforts to gather the votes to remove him from the position this week.
“We're either going to get compliance, or we're going to start having votes on motions to vacate, and we're gonna have it regularly," Gaetz told reporters earlier this week."I don't anticipate them passing immediately. But if we have to begin every single day in Congress with the prayer, the pledge, and the motion to vacate, then so be it.”
Mace agreed with Gaetz’s sentiments that McCarthy had failed to fulfill some promises he pledged to make as speaker. “We’ll see how it turns out, but I will tell you, I’m one of those members who were made certain promises,” Mace said. “I’ve worked on women’s issues. I’ve worked on issues you know, related to gun violence, that I feel are very important. And you know, it’s fallen on deaf ears. And if I give a handshake to someone, I expect them to follow through.
“If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the f***ing motion,” McCarthy said, according to Rep. Brian Mast , who recalled the moment to reporters.
