The owner of a Naperville shaved ice business breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after the Naperville City Council in a split vote opted to take no action regulating food trucks.

The Naperville City Council considered requiring permits for mobile food vendors like Sno Problems near Aurora Avenue and Webster Street.

Food trucks appeal to people who often don’t have the patience, budget or the time to sit down at a restaurant, and they bring variety and gourmet food not available at brick-and-mortar restaurants in the community, she said. City staff said they are aware of five food vendors who have been operating long-term on private property, including a shaved ice stand at 141 Aurora Ave.; a taco truck at 991 W. Ogden Ave. at the Marathon gas station; a hot dog cart at 1280 W. Ogden Ave. at the Amoco gas station; a taco truck at 715 Fort Hill Drive in the Menards parking lot; and a taco truck in Westridge Court parking lot near Portillo’s.

Councilman Ian Holzhauer said zoning isn’t an issue because city staff determined that food trucks can operate on any business property.
