In preparation for Naperville Public Library’s switch to a new online catalog system, training events are being held throughout September and October to help residents get acquainted.
The new catalog has a more sophisticated search engine and better browsing features, library Executive Director Dave Della Terza said.Currently, residents can toggle between the old and new catalog system to try it out. The new system will officially migrate Oct. 2.
“It’s has a much easier way for customers to be able to search for items and navigate through their accounts,” Della Terza said. For example, if a word is misspelled, the catalog can recognize typos and offer corrections, instead of simply returning no results. The catalog also brings back the ability to search for new and upcoming items, a feature that was previously lost and upset many patrons, Della Terza said. The catalog also can understand non-Latin characters, making it much easier to access the library’s international books, he said.
Two-hour drop-in sessions to provide more info on how the news system will work will be held at these times and locations:9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at the 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Drive;11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Nichols Library.
