National Guard officials report that troops are leaving at a faster rate than they are enlisting. The Army and Air Guards failed to meet goals for the fiscal year.
According to officials, there is a total annual loss of about 7,500 service members.
While he said the impact on the branch is"minimal and manageable," Baldwin predicted that"readiness issues related to strength" would begin to emerge within its units within the next year or two. Gen. Daniel Hokanson, head of the National Guard Bureau, said both the Army and Air Guards failed to meet their goals for the total number of service members in the fiscal year that ended last Friday – ending about 2% below the goal.
There was a 10% shortfall in the number of current Army National Guard soldiers who opted to reenlist.
