In life, there will be 'ups' and 'downs' — the key is not letting the 'downs' stop you from moving forward
Unless a filmmaker intends to stretch their story into further sequels or spinoffs, most movies end with the denouement: the final part of a narrative in which the central obstacle has been resolved and the final matters explained or dealt with.
With cliffhangers, though, storytellers leave just enough of the narrative unresolved, or they introduce a new twist, that forces you to return later for the closure you seek. A cliffhanger suspends you by keeping you in a state of tension. It prevents you from experiencing the full catharsis of the denouement by reactivating your curiosity, demanding vigilance for what is yet to come.In the New Testament, the Book of Acts is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke.
And then, out of nowhere, presumably after he’d felt like he’d given enough instruction, the author of Acts writes that while the disciples were watching him, Jesus was “lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight.” This Copperfieldian magic trick left his friends staring upward, mystified.
For a moment, then, may we set aside questions of whether or not a man actually flew up and away into the clouds. In its place I’d like to explore what I think this story has to say about what it means to be human.
