The North East Independent School District will spend more than $2.5 million on a school safety product but won't say what it is.
North East ISD board president Shannon Grona and Superintendent Sean Maika listen to comments at a meeting in 2021.The North East Independent School District’s board was briefed Monday on what, exactly, it had authorized to purchase last month when it voted to waive procurement limits requiring competitive bidding on things worth more than $50,000.
The agenda item was labeled, “Emergency Purchase Related to School Safety.” An attached document said it involved the School Safety Standards Formula grant, a $400 million state program that gave the district $2.5 million. The grant helps school districts meet the state’s safety standards and can also be used to purchase “metal detectors, cameras, and monitoring tools such as those allowed under the school safety allotment,” according to the Texas Education Agency website.
