Netflix announced Monday that it will make its next sports docu-series on the U.S. women's World Cup team, featuring athlete and LGBT activist Megan Rapinoe.
Rapinoe, a U.S. women's soccer star, has advocated in the past for including transgender athletes in women's sports and has also called on the United States to continue fighting against anti-transgender legislation. Earlier this month, Rapinoe said she would"absolutely" support and welcome transgender athletes on the U.S. Women's National Team, even if said athlete would replace a biological woman.
Rapinoe, 38, announced earlier this month she will retire soon, playing her fourth World Cup with the National Women's Soccer League this summer.The athlete has been criticized by conservatives for her support for transgender athletes competing against biological women, including Riley Gaines, a former championship swimmer-turned-women’s sports advocate. On July 10, Gaines criticized Rapinoe's stance for welcoming transgender athletes to women's sports.
“She’s actually someone who fought for women in sports," Gaines said."She fought for equal pay, she fought for equal access, equal resources — all of those things in comparison to the women’s U.S. national soccer team to the men’s. Now she is undermining her fight entirely."
