The skincare brand helped this emerging director bring a moving story to life.

By Amanda FloresAs a child, Sarah-Jean Williams preferred to play the role of the knight who stands up for injustice and masters sword fighting. When a classmate in grade school laughed at this dream and told her she couldn’t have been a knight because of her skin color and that instead, she would’ve been a slave, it crushed her.

Applicants submitted scripts with the theme of “imagining a world where skin is not a barrier,” a message that’s personal to Williams. “I think it’s really wonderful what Neutrogena [is] doing [by] trying to find young filmmakers to tell their own stories in this way,” she said. She believes that even though people are trying to move towards self-acceptance, there’s still a lot of internalized hate that exists.

In speaking with friends and sharing her experience, she realized that she wasn’t the only one living with internalized racism. “I wanted to tap into that,” she said. “What does it mean to wear a mask and to not feel comfortable in the skin you’re wearing, especially being a Black woman?”Inspired by the biography of French ballerina Chloé Lopes Gomes, Williams’ winning submission,, tells the story of a dancer who is asked to wear light-toned makeup to conceal her Black skin.

Williams emphasizes the importance of telling these stories that are unique to each person but are also experienced by many. “Women of color specifically have a unique and often painful perspective that deserves to be explored in artistic form,” she said. “Those are the stories I like telling.”Neutrogena’s fellowship includes $25,000 to go towards production, as well as professional guidance with celebrity mentors Chloe and Halle Bailey.
