Five years ago, John had become aware of our basses and wanted to try one out. We got one to him and he liked it. So it passed that first test. And that began a relationship of just providing the best possible customer service to him that we could, with no expectation of anything in return.
He also approached us late in 2021 about doing a signature model because 2022 was the 40th anniversary of Rio. It took more than the initial estimate of six months to get something developed and so, here we are a year and a half later, and now we’ve got it finalized. But it was worth the extra time. The tone of the bass — well, the tone of all of our basses — is heavily influenced by his tone on Rio, and the preamp is designed by the same company that built the console and recorded Rio. And now this new bass is going to influence Duran’s music going forward. So it’s kind of a neat life cycle of how things rolled out.Article contentThis is kind of our first collaboration with somebody who’s not just an elite artist, but is a legit rock star.
We also collaborated with Lee Sklar, one of the most recorded humans in history — he’s played on probably 20,000 or 30,000 songs. We’ve had a relationship with him since 1995. I forget when we worked on his signature model, but that would have been the first one, I think. I estimated how much time I’ve spent researching and paying attention to what our customers’ preferences are, it would be well over the 10,000-hour mark.
It’s been a 35-year journey so far, and many hands along the way helped with that. It would be really difficult to add up all the people that contributed time, energy and creativity to the company, and to this project itself. But it’s pretty mind-boggling to think of just how wonderful it is to be able to be touched by all these people and to be able to grow because of it.
