Fort Worth’s city council is considering a proposal to grant the Michigan-based company up to $2 million in tax abatements to locate a new distribution center near the Texas Motor Speedway. The property is at 16101 Wolf Crossing off State Highway 114 andCarhartt plans to invest $80 million in a “state of the art distribution center space,” Cherie Gordon of Fort Worth’s economic development department told city council at a Tuesday work session.
“Those 500 jobs are to be organic and local – they are not having transfers for those jobs,” Gordon said. Carhartt is asking the city for a seven-year, 75% tax abatement on its new operation. Fort Worth’s council has a formal vote on the economic incentives scheduled next month. A family-owned business started in the 1880s, Carhartt employs more than 5,000 workers nationwide. The company sells its popular lines of work clothes and outdoor apparel out of about three dozen company-owned stores, through other retailers and online.
