WASHINGTON — A novel program for parents of highly dependent adult children reduces parental burden and anxiety in their offspring, a new pilot study shows.
The investigators note that intervening is often challenging because individuals with the syndrome are frequently noncompliant with therapy, and currently there is no standard of care. The research adapted it to treat FTL. SPACE-FTL focuses on reducing parents' family accommodation , a descriptor for a child's excessive dependence on their parents to help them avoid anxiety-provoking situations.
"This population is self-isolating and parents sometimes don't know what's going on," and ABCL measures may not be"as sensitive as we would have liked them to be," Berger said.
