Hotel workers may receive new safeguards in LA County unincorporated areas

Hotel worker protections are being considered for inclusion in a sweeping ordinance proposed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, Aug. 8, for those working in unincorporated parts of the county., Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Long Beach and Glendale, the county reported.• Mandates employers to provide personal security devices, also known as panic buttons, to all hotel employees who work in guest rooms or restrooms by themselves.

The board asked the Office of County Counsel to put these and other conditions into a hotel worker protection ordinance that applies to workers in the unincorporated areas of LA County. The ordinance would come back to the board for approval at a later date. Horvath said the ordinance will “plug the hole” in protections in major cities but so far not in unincorporated areas. She authored the ordinance when mayor of West Hollywood. One of the concerns from businesses is abiding by differing rules and she said this will help level that playing field.

“I don’t want people laid off as a result,” Barger said. She said a study of hotels in Los Angeles found 5,856 jobs lost last year.
