Migrants will stay in rooms leased at a hotel near George Bush Intercontinental Airport to facilitate easy travel out of Houston and a comfortable sojourn. The transfer center will also provide free transportation to the central Greyhound bus station. The new shelter is opening as an unprecedented number of people arrived in 2022 at the U.S.-Mexico border, many of them fleeing deteriorating economic conditions after the pandemic, as well as political persecution, gang violence and the environmental impact of climate change.
