The Albuquerque Police Department is home to New Mexico's only horse-mounted unit and now they're helping another law enforcement agency in Idaho build its own unit.'They're my babies. Horses do that to you. They're amazing. They'll do anything for you,' said Robert Vick , an Albuquerque man who has donated several horses and gear to APD over the years.'Having the officers out there on horses, it softens them.
APD's horse-mounted unit took some time to teach him techniques, lessons learned over the years, and what it's like to start a unit from scratch.'Over the years we've had a lot of stuff donated, and when the unit started out back in 1977, they were riding their own horses. All the tack was donated. So it's very much starting from the ground level,' said Sgt. Mike Schroeder with APD's horse-mounted unit.
