Developers broke ground March 31 on OST Lofts, a mixed-income development in the Gulfgate neighborhood that will feature a free pre-K.A new 130-unit mixed-income housing development has broken ground in the Gulfgate neighborhood southeast of the University of Houston. In addition to a number of amenities common to apartment complexes — a pool, a fitness center, granite countertops — the OST Lofts will feature an unusual perk: free pre-K.
Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a release that the development"helps one generation by ensuring their cost of living is reasonable and also helps the next generation thrive by providing a free pre-kindergarten center that will equip the youngest of residents with the skills they need to succeed in life.
Mixed-income apartment complexes offer units affordable to households of various incomes, including those who can afford market rates, with the idea that a community with diverse incomes is more vibrant than one that is economically segregated. At the OST Lofts, located at 5520 Old Spanish Trail, units will be reserved for households in different income bands.
