The wait is finally over for a project people in Pensacola have been looking forward to.

Beyond this sign is a new 40-acre facility. It’s Pensacola’s newest two lane, boat ramp located on Heron Bayou.

“I think it’s gone be nice actually because it’ll give us some more access to getting out into the water. Actually, I live on the other side of it there but we can come down and launch here instead of going all the way out,” said Floyd Wilson. The site was designed with the community in mind. There’s plenty of parking — 62 spaces for vehicles with trailers and 22 spots for cars without trailers. A look around the area and you’ll also discover a landing area along the Perdido paddling trail with two campsites.

“I was actually really happy to see what the — the amount of work they put in them compared to some of the other county things that fall through the cracks just a little bit,” said Daniel Braidlow, the manager at Barnacle Bob’s Bait & Tackle right down the road from the facility. “But it’s not the county’s fault. It’s mainly the contractors.”

The journey to the grand opening dates back to 2013, when the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners bought the property, paying well over $1 million using Local Option Sales Tax III funds.“Now that this boat ramp has opened, it has given us more of a main pull pole compared to what we used to be because now there’s actually a ramp people can come to we’re just not a stop on the way anymore,” said Braidlow. “We’re actually there. So it’s going to help out tremendously.
