New York City lawmakers are set to vote on a bill that would let more than 800,000 residents who aren’t U.S. citizens vote in local elections, potentially becoming the largest city in the U.S. to do so

New York City lawmakers are set to take up a bill that would let more than 800,000 residents who aren’t U.S. citizens—and if passed, the city would become the largest in the U.S. to grant access to the polls to noncitizens.

The City Council planned to vote Thursday afternoon on the measure, which if enacted would take effect for council races in 2023. It has prompted legal questions as well as concerns from Republicans.
