The tussle over gas use is becoming an increasingly political one. Democrats and environmental advocates continue to push for other states to adopt the ban, referencing New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act which was passed in 2019. The act ranks among the most ambitious climate laws in the country, requiring New York to reduce emissions by 40 percent by 2030 and no less than 85 percent by 2050.
While a state like New York passing a natural gas ban might indicate the movement is becoming more mainstream and may serve to pave the way for similar moves in other cities and municipalities, states like Texas, Arizona, and Ohio continue to push for preemptive measures against such bans.
