Mayor Ras J. Baraka, a two-term incumbent, leads a slate that also includes candidates for all 9 council seats, 5 of them running unopposed

of the Lords of the Underground, who hopes to become the nation’s first “platinum selling” hip-hop artist elected to public office.

Kelly will vie against Chigozie Onyema, Oscar James II, Lyndon Brown, LaVita Johnson, and Michelle “Mimi” Littleton. The South Ward race also has six candidates: Christina Cherry; Patrick Council; Terrance Bankston; Trenton Jones; Cynthia Truitt-Rease; and Douglas H. Freeman. Council has Baraka’s backing.

The Central Ward race pits an incumbent with Baraka’s backing, Councilwoman LaMonica McIver, against a Newark public schools teacher and coach, Shawn X. McCray, in a rematch of the 2018 contest that McIver won in a runoff. The four at-large candidates on the mayor’s slate, Carlos Gonzalez, C. Lawrence Crump, Luis Quintana, and Louise Scott-Rountree, are running unopposed. So is the Baraka-backed North Ward candidate,Turnout has been low in Newark elections. Baraka’s lopsided re-election bid in the city’s May election last year only drew 19.7% of the city’s registered voters to the polls four years ago.
