'Jimbo Fisher, an excitable man, said Nick Saban maybe needed to be slapped upside the head when he was a child, but it was Alabama’s coach who did all the punching on Tuesday,' sports columnist JoeGoodmanJr writes.

like the always-nervous profession of college football coaching has never seen. Fisher didn’t calm down over the weekend, and now Saban has one of Fisher’s former quarterback commitments.

For starters, the timing isn’t a coincidence. Saban’s national reputation as a recruiter took a hit after Fisher’s tirade. Inside the Alabama bubble that might seem impossible, but Fisher’s insults were celebrated pretty much everywhere else. It was an unprecedented attack on Saban’s character, or any coach for that matter. Remember, not one single coach ever said a word about Urban Meyer after his scandalous break up with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It feels like a direct shot at Fisher, who had his ability as a recruiter questioned by Saban, the best to ever do it. With Fisher still talking about NIL deals over the weekend, Saban’s rebuttal was a major recruiting win with a Top 10 quarterback who had been committed to Texas A&M. This new era of college football, where players can be paid for their name, image and likeness, is a major test for Saban in his final years. Alabama isn’t going to be able to outspend everybody. If Saban can’t be the best recruiter in the country anymore, then Alabama’s dynasty will fade.
