The Niles-Maine District Library requested information on how its tax levies have affected taxpayers and will then hold a public hearing before it sets the next tax levy.

The Niles-Maine District Library Board of Trustees is expected to ask the public for feedback about potentially recapturing more than $2 million in property tax revenue the district lost when a previous Board reduced the library’s tax levy over the last three years. The board agreed by consent at its regular meeting Wednesday, Oct. 18, to wait to schedule a public hearing until after learning at an Oct. 30 special meeting how such an increase might affect taxpayers.

Before approving an increase of 5% or more in its request for property taxes, the board agreed by consent to ask Renner to provide estimates of how much the largest possible tax increase would affect homeowners. The board specifically asked Renner to provide estimates of how much such an increase would affect the owner of a $300,000 home in Niles and a $300,000 home in unincorporated Maine Township.
