NJ Transit officials are looking to leave their roughly 30-year-old office building in Newark for leased space in the city

Officials are looking to lease office space in Newark instead.NJ Transit officials plan to relocate from the transit agency’s headquarters in Newark to leased space at nearby 2 Gateway Center in the city, saying it would be too costly to retrofit the current offices on Raymond Boulevard near Penn Station.
The final cost and details of the lease have to be negotiated with Onyx Equities, LLC, Gateway’s owners, officials said. Gateway has three office towers, Gateway Two is an 18-story, 798,186-square-foot office tower, with 28 floors fronting on Market Street and connected to Newark Penn Station by a pedestrian skybridge.
NJ Transit occupies the buildings at 1 and 2 Penn Plaza east, opposite Penn Station Newark. Those buildings were constructed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 1 Penn Plaza building had been NJ Transits headquarters for decades. It’s the 16th tallest building in the city. “We concluded a deal with Hartz where we ended up so we have the whole building,” Corbett said. “That triggered our ability to say what do we do with this building now that we own it and whether we renovate it.”
