Both brands look strong heading in 2022
However, even in an “off” year, Sony has still managed to produce top notch offerings itself, even outside of its biggest franchises. Returnal, Ratchet and Clank and Deathloop have all been in the GOTY conversation as well, and even if Deathloop is from the now Microsoft-owned Bethesda, Sony had the foresight to snap it up for an exclusivity deal.
Microsoft has gotten a lot of good headlines like Erik’s based on the prominence of Xbox Game Pass, as we are now starting to see the fruits of investment in that platform when gamesForza and Halo launch day one there, playable on a wide range of hardware from PC to consoles to mobile via the cloud. Sony does seem out of step with its $70 offerings and yet, they do that because they know they’ll sell. And sell they have.
The hardware sales rush is almost a tie by default. Neither company can produce their top end consoles fast enough due to shortages. Xbox may have some more availability due to the Xbox Series S as a “middleground” new-gen console, but PS5 demand is simply on another plane of existence. It would have easily been the fastest-selling console in history this year by a mile without the shortages, and almost hit that mark.
In the end, I think Xbox may have “caught up” to Sony in terms of at least positive press, player sentiment and at least this year, exclusive quality. And yet PlayStation is so far ahead at baseline, and has so much brand loyalty, paired with a never-ending parade of excellent games, it’s certainly not being left in the dust in any sense. We will likely see them work on something more akin to a Game Pass competitor, but the PlayStation brand remains strong.
