QB Steele Pizzella overcomes a few gaffes and makes some clutch plays in the second half as Notre Dame improves to 4-1.

WESTLAKE — With each of Steele Pizzella’s gaffes came an equally mind-boggling highlight.

Pizzella’s a still maturing ball of talent and both sides of that were on display Thursday night as Notre Dame beat Westlake 27-6 at Westlake High. The first came with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter, when Pizzella found Puodziunas on a post route for the Knights’ opening touchdown to make it 10-0.

With 2:30 remaining in the third quarter and the Knights facing third-and-8 from their 17, Pizzella scrambled the width of the field looking for a receiver before directing his momentum forward and picking up the first down with his legs. “We started to get into a little bit of a running rhythm with getting the lion’s share of those touches,” Yabu said. “His physical presence was slowly pulling some life out of them.”
