A child's early years are the most important for cognitive development. But the education gap between rich and poor children is widening. Supported by Mishcon_de_Reya
To understand the much-talked-about demise of the nuclear family, the UK provides a stark example. Despite the population doubling since Victorian times, the number of marriages has stayed at a similar level. Since 1945, the number of divorces has multiplied by more than seven times. Almost half of children are now born out of wedlock—and even those remaining “traditional” families are smaller than they used to be.
In the traditional family formula, marriage is followed by babies. For most families that now means fewer children than before and having them later in life, and, for increasing numbers, it means an active decision not to have children. Not necessarily. As studying or working abroad—or even moving within your own country for a job—is increasingly common and women enter the workforce in growing numbers, two-career couples may find themselves living in different places. From 2000 to 2017, there was a 44% rise in the number of married couples living apart—equating to four million people.
What was once seen as a niche service for heterosexual couples who were unable to conceive naturally, surrogacy became more popular as same-sex male couples sought a way to have children of their own. Advances such as IVF, changing cultural attitudes and the trend for having children later also contributed to the recent boom in surrogacy. Surrogacy has even become, for some, a lifestyle choice – essentially outsourcing pregnancy.
