An NYPD officer was shot in the leg in Brooklyn Wednesday and the suspect was also hit, two senior police officials at the scene and one at the hospital where the latter was taken said.
Cops were responding to a domestic call on Gates Avenue -- at a Bedford-Stuyvesant address linked to a six-story apartment building -- around 9 a.m. when they exchanged fire with the suspect, the sources said. According to a police official at the hospital, officers were trying to apprehend the suspect when he managed to pull his hand out, grab a gun from his own waistband and shoot the cop.
Officers returned fire, hitting him, the official said. It wasn't immediately clear how many times the suspect was hit, nor was the severity of his injuries immediately known.The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.No other details were immediately available.
