Anakin chills with Order 66 Troopers in a behind-the-scenes image from the set of ObiWanKenobi

A new behind-the-scenes image from Obi-Wan Kenobi shows Hayden Christensen with the 501st Clone Troopers. 17 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was released in theaters, Christensen recently made his return as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Disney+’s limited series. In addition to catching up with Ewan McGregor’s “Ben” and his fallen apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi revisits Order 66.

During the Clone Wars, the 501st was a special division of the Galactic Republic army led by their General, Anakin, Captain Rex, and, occasionally, Ahsoka Tano. The battalion is shown in the animated series The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. After Palpatine executed Order 66 and Anakin fell to the dark side, Vader and Commander Appo led the 501st “Legion” to the Jedi Temple to slaughter Jedi and the younglings—which is shown from Reva’s perspective in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

That said, The Book of Boba Fett actor did make an appearance in episode 2. As the Empire stopped using clones, Morrison is seen as a veteran trooper in Obi-Wan Kenobi begging for credits on the streets of Daiyu.

The inclusion of 501st specifically in Obi-Wan Kenobi is meaningful to The Clone Wars fans who associate the armor with the countless times they saw it under the command of Matt Lanter’s Anakin. Following his work on The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni began work on Disney+’s first live-action series, The Mandalorian, which has gone a long way in bridging the gap between Star Wars films and animations. Suffice to say, Obi-Wan Kenobi would not exist on Disney+ without the success of The Mandalorian.
