In this talk, we present a historical outline of how the solar corona can be observed, and the evolution of those instruments.

In this talk, we present a historical outline of how the solar corona can be observed, and the evolution of the instruments that were designed to observe it.

We explain the basics of the physics of the solar corona and introduce what is a Coronal Mass Ejection , as well as how these transient phenomena can impact Earth. Finally, we present the latest generation of coronagraph instruments designed and built at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory for NOAA.

He worked at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille, where he developed a ground processing pipeline and worked on in-flight calibration of the LASCO coronagraphs onboard the ESA-NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft. In 2003, he started to work as a contractor and then, in 2013, as an employee in the Space Science Division, Solar Physics Branch, of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, USA.

On the research side, he developed a forward modeling technique for the 3D reconstruction of solar coronal features, particularly coronal mass ejections , using data from NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory spacecraft. On the engineering side, he was the optics lead of the SoloHI instrument as well as the WISPR instrument.

Dr. Thernisien is the current Principal Investigator of the Compact Coronagraph . CCOR is a series of operational space coronagraphs, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , that will be used to perform space weather forecasts.

India Follows its Lunar Mission by Sending a Spacecraft to Study the SunIndia Follows its Lunar Mission by Sending a Spacecraft to Study the SunAmid its Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon, India’s space agency launched another satellite and this one will study the Sun. The spacecraft, called Aditya-L1, is bound for the Earth-Sun L1 Lagrange Point, located 1.5 million km from Earth. This will give it a perfect perspective to watch the Sun, similar to NASA’s SOHO mission. It … Continue reading 'India Follows its Lunar Mission by Sending a Spacecraft to Study the Sun'

Camera 'hack' lets Solar Orbiter peer deeper into sun's atmosphereCamera 'hack' lets Solar Orbiter peer deeper into sun's atmosphereScientists have used Solar Orbiter's EUI camera in a new mode of operation to record part of the sun's atmosphere at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths that has been almost impossible to image until now. This new mode of operation was made possible with a last-minute 'hack' to the camera and will almost certainly influence new solar instruments for future missions.
