On Nov. 30, 1941 Louis Armstrong “the Trumpet King of Swing” performed with his orchestra on stage at the Paramount Theatre, at 5404 Hohman Ave. in Hammond, playing before an audience of 2,000.

The New Orleans icon, who died at age 69 in 1971, was a loud and proud voice for the fight for civil rights, which is a layer to the legendary jazz musician that is overlooked, but not the case, in the new Broadway bound musical chronicling his life and career titled “A Wonderful World, A New Musical about the Life and Loves of Louis Armstrong” starring Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart in the title role.

Also known by the stage nickname “Satchmo,” Armstrong never forgot his poor youth in New Orleans and always wanted to “avoid putting on airs.” Until seeing this new musical, I never realized other Black musicians criticized Armstrong for agreeing to play concerts in front of segregated audiences and questioned why he didn’t take a stronger initial stand for the American civil rights movement.
