The launch of legal sports betting in Ohio is scheduled for Jan. 1. The deadline to apply for a license was Aug. 15.

The license isn't the finish line, warned Jessica Franks, spokesperson for the casino commission. Compliance materials, such as security measures and responsible gaming plans, have to be submitted by November, and licensees may need to wait on other licensees before starting up.

Around the Columbus metro area, nearly 80 bars, bowling alleys and more threw their hat in. In southwest Ohio, there were 58 applicants in Hamilton County, 23 in Butler County and four in Warren County. In northeast Ohio, 26 businesses in Stark County and 34 in Summit County have applied to host a kiosk.

Not all kiosk locations will be small businesses. Roughly 40 Kroger locations and nine Giant Eagle stores want licenses as well.s are teaming up with other companies to offer sports betting to fans on their phones and in person. The Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds and FC Cincinnati have applied. So have the Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Crew SC and major Cleveland sports teams. Widely known mobile apps such as FanDuel and Caesars Sportsbook are likely to play a major role.

But in order to offer sports betting, hosts have to also partner with one of seven kiosk operators, whose licenses will take longer to complete. That's the same timeline with licenses for sports teams, casinos and mobile apps, which Franks says won't likely hear a final decision until fall.
