State marijuana regulators are changing the definition of THC -- the psychoactive substance in the drug that produces a “high” -- to include more cannabinoids, including those traditionally found in hemp.
The compounds offer different psychoactive effects alone or when blended together, said Tom Haren, an attorney who is chair of the cannabis law group at Franz Ward LLP in Cleveland.
Many Ohio medical marijuana businesses were already labeling the different types of THC compounds on their products, Haren said.“I think what it does is it accounts for formulations that are being contemplated or were already being used,” he said. “This is just the rules catching up.” Gary Wenk, a professor of psychology and neuroscience and molecular virology, immunology and molecular genetics at Ohio State University, said that it’s common to discover new properties of drugs after they hit the market.
“We’re breeding different plants, or mixing different species, and people are looking for molecules in the plant that no one cared about before,” he said. “You’ve probably heard the saying, ‘This is not your grandfather’s marijuana.’ Things have changed a lot.”“The old distinction of sativa and indica doesn’t hold up any more,” he said.
