Republican state lawmakers are considering a sweeping overhaul of Ohio’s voting system that is pitting the state’s bipartisan elections officials against a right-wing citizen’s group whose top members believe the widely rejected theory that the 2020 presidential election was marred by widespread fraud.

Ohio voters cast their ballots on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, in Ohio’s primary election. Voter turnout was small according to a couple of poll workers. A voter has her ballot scanned in the Beachwood Recreation Center. David Petkiewicz, cleveland.

“We see this bill as something that’s going to squeeze taxpayers across the board as well as burden voters,” said Paul Adams, director of the Lorain County Board of Elections and president of the Ohio Elections Officials Association. “It’s an unfunded mandate in search of a problem.” The House version of the bill has received a handful of committee hearings since it was introduced in late April. In a sign the bill may have broader support within the GOP-controlled legislature, Brenner and state Sen. Theresa Gavarone, a Bowling Green Republican who serves in Senate leadership and who sponsored the last change to elections laws, introduced an identical version of the bill late last month.

“We’ve shared some agreement, as well as some questions and concerns, with the sponsors of the bill, and we’ll continue to have that conversation throughout the legislative process,” Kindel said in an email. “It’s always our top priority to maintain Ohio’s reputation as the gold standard for election integrity, and we appreciate the General Assembly’s commitment to upholding that high standard.”
