Ohio Senate GOP moves ahead with plan for August election on constitutional rules
How did we get here?Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Ashville, and Secretary of State Frank LaRose tried to fast-track the proposal during last year's lame-duck session, but it didn't have enough support in the House to pass.in January, and it's been slow to get off the ground since then. He claimed stalling the resolution was part of a deal Speaker Jason Stephens, R-Kitts Hill, made with Democrats to get the speaker's gavel earlier this year.
The delays frustrated Senate President Matt Huffman, R-Lima, who was ready to pass a bill during lame duck and put the question on the May ballot. He floated the possibility of an August election earlier this week, in part to get ahead of a likely November ballot initiative that would expand abortion access in Ohio.
Anti-abortion groups have urged lawmakers to put the amendment question before voters as soon as possible. The core of the Senate proposal is the same as Stewart's, but it does not include some changes he made in January. For example, Stewart's version would require petitioners to get voter signatures from all 88 counties instead of 44."I'm not happy with the pace we've had in the House, so I'm sure they've had similar frustrations," he said.
